Comprehensive Evaluations

At Speech of Cake, we offer comprehensive evaluations to better understand each child's individual strengths and areas of need. Our evaluations are designed to provide a deeper understanding of a child's speech, language, literacy, and communication skills to help guide individualized recommendations and treatment planning.

What to Expect

Evaluations are tailored to each child's age, developmental level, and areas of concern. Depending on the reason for referral, an evaluation may assess areas such as:

  • Speech Sound Production:  Articulation, phonological patterns, and overall speech intelligibility.

  • Receptive Language: Understanding of spoken language, vocabulary, and directions.

  • Expressive Language: Use of vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, and language organization.

  • Literacy: Phonological awareness, decoding, spelling, reading fluency, reading comprehension, and written expression.

  • Fluency: Speech fluency, including stuttering and its impact on communication.

  • Orofacial Myofunctional Skills: Oral resting posture, breathing patterns, and oral movement patterns related to speech and swallowing.

Not every area will be assessed during every evaluation. Assessment procedures are selected based on the child's individual needs and the concerns identified during the initial consultation.

Previous Evaluations and Records

If your child has previously completed an evaluation through another provider, school, or agency, please submit a copy of the report at your earliest convenience. Reviewing previous assessments helps us better understand your child's history, avoid unnecessary duplication of testing, and determine whether additional assessment is warranted.

Following the Evaluation

Following the evaluation, families will receive a comprehensive written report outlining assessment findings, the child's strengths and areas of need, and individualized recommendations. Recommendations may include speech-language or literacy therapy, additional assessment, collaboration with other professionals, or strategies to support your child's development at home and school.

Our goal is to help families better understand their child's unique profile and identify meaningful next steps to support their communication and learning.
