Ever wonder how Speech of Cake came to be?
Courtney and Leigh shared a classroom at Waynewood Elementary School in Alexandria, VA where Courtney was the Speech-Language Pathologist and Leigh was a K-3 Special Education Teacher.
They shared a lot of the same students and noticed that their oral language needs overlapped with their written language needs. So the two started a cooking class to help students with a number of skills: reading, writing, articulation, sequencing, following directions, requesting, taking turns, measuring, and more!
Each Friday, students were excited to cook with them. Students didn't realize they were learning at the same time! After much success with this model, Courtney and Leigh decided to start a summer enrichment program in 2017. Each year, the program has blossomed and flourished into the award-winning summer enrichment program it is today.
Courtney and Leigh are dedicated to providing their clients with resources to make communication and literacy skills a piece of cake! 🎂
